Adaptive Design :: Mobile Device Friendly Websites

Apparently, one third of all UK Web page visits are from a mobile device!

Looking at the statistics for mobile device using visitors to our client sites, we have some B2C sites getting 70 to 100% of their site visits on a day from mobile devices. More B2B sites tend to have 5 to 10% of their site visitors using mobile devices.

Mobile devices include tablets such as the popular iPad and a mobile phones where the iPhone and then the Samsung Galaxy phones are the most popular.

For all of our client sites, there is a growing level of site visitors using mobile devices.

We are consequently developing what is being called “Adaptive Design” so that a site visitor automatically gets a re-configured site that is optimised for their device. The content, navigation and layout are often even set to change as you rotate your device (table or smart phone) from landscape to portrait (and back again).

This is part of a project to update the www.JamesWalker.biz site.

Their current site looks like this:

Current site (2013 Q1)

Unrelated to the Adaptive Design for Mobile Devices project there has been a desire for the left hand column to be dropped and the font size pushed up. We have combined this with a new footer site map for general usability and SEO (Search Engine Optomisation). It means that site visitors that read to the bottom of a long page have a menu to hand.

And now for how this looks on a few mobile devices:

iPad in portrait and landscape.

As the user rotates the iPad the footer information auto moves to more or less columns and the drop down menu compresses or expands to fit without the user need to scroll. The site works in the same way on an Android tablet.

On an iPhone (below) the content also alters as the user moves between landscape and portrait. In addition the menu auto works in a different way. It is a menu where the options appear or disappear as the user clicks the menu items.

A lot of this will relate to improving the energy efficiency of the homes in the Perranzabuloe parish, so that residents have more comfortable (warmer, less damp, less draughty) homes that use less energy.

In collaboration

With the HNG team we developed a minimal online identity where the property database takes center stage.

The property features were expanded to integrate with Google Maps, have brochures, floor plans and energy performance documents attached along with specialist contacts and property details, all of which are searchable.

This gave the end user a much more informative and user friendly property database to use and the client a solution they found easy to use and maintain.

Yes some of our client sectors aren’t as busy as others, but even within sectors that aren’t as busy, there are clients taking advantage of the reduced work load to update and expand their Website and other marketing, to launch new initiatives, to gain market share compared to others.

Giles Andrews at Andrews Denford & Boyd has launched Office Space, where we created the branding (logo etc.), the Web site and printed marketing material.

Quite a few clients, including Acorn Homes (who build luxury new homes in Cornwall) are focusing on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) as a cost effective way of increasing enquiries from potential clients.

Earlier in the year, we created a new site for freelance journalist Jane Labous. It’s great to watch her posts as she wanders (mostly) around Africa.

“Amazing – thanks Rory, you guys are amazing.”

and the job is still in progress !

We are upgrading her JaneLabous.com Website. This has included recommending a way for her to manage her growing porfolio of amazing photogaphs that often end up in magazines and newspapers. For that we recommended SmugMug. Have a look at what she’s so far put there:

When the site went live, we had this further feedback from Jane:

“Ace Rory, thanks on all counts. Yeah I think it looks brilliant – really
pleased.

One of our long term clients, www.JamesWalker.biz wanted to put QR codes on folders and other notices at one of their exhibition stands. So that stand visitors could scan the codes to get the brochures in PDF format or videos direct to their smart phones.

But how to track how well this works ?

As the links to the PDFs would not involve an HTML page, we couldn’t at first think of a way to track these downloads (OK Web server logs, but they can be cumbersome).

Until Phill at James Walker found and has started using http://qrpro.co.uk/, where with your account, they’ll give you reporting on how many times your QR code is used ! The pricing structure is sensible, with 1000 hits for £1, so 12 codes on 12 items for £12.

5th October 2011 update on tracking

Jamie who does Search Engine Optomisation (SEO) for quite a few our clients has also pointed out that you could use the Google URL builder to put tracking on specific URLs (that could be Web pages, PDFs etc.). This would integrate the tracking into the Google Analytics for a client / project.

More information on this is at http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55578
