Design Criteria

The Chicken Release has been designed and tested towards the following criteria:

  • Allows the bar to spin.
  • Releases when covered in sand.
  • Allows a kite safety line to be used.
  • Fits with most kites, kite bars and harnesses on the market.
    • While a lot of kites now have improved release and safety devices, this is not universal and many kite surfers want to 'lock on' to their existing kite and not use a wrist leash.
  • Does not release when being body dragged in the water or on-land.
  • Gives a reliable and consistent position for the release mechanism to the rider.
  • Allows a rider to have one system they use and transfer between all their kites.
    • The time and method of fitting mean that some systems have to be repeat bought for each kite in a riders quiver.
  • Releases under load.
    • It has been observed that the amount of force to release some release shackles can exceed the levels experienced when kitesurfing. It has been noticed that on some release shackles, the split pin loop into the release pin can come off before the release shackle opens.
  • Does not detach from the harness spreader bar hook when the rider hooks into the (if used) 'main' harness loop attached to the bar.
    • It has been observed that this 'main' harness loop attached to the bar, can push up the tube / pin device that some systems use to keep the chicken loop attached to the harness spreader bar hook.

The current design does NOT:

  • Give a method of release from a single harness loop off the bar, where this loop is hooked into the harness spreader bar hook and not into the "chicken release" device.
